Nature lovers and eagle watchers have been glued to their screens, waiting with bated breath as drama unfolded in Big Bear eagle nest. The saga of Jackie and Shadow’s eaglets has resonated far and wide, having over 83,000 viewers tune into the live stream. But in recent, dark developments, a lot of people are starting to wonder: what happened to the third chick?
The eagle nest, located high in the mountains of Big Bear, California, has been filled with activity since the eggs hatched. But recent observations have alarmed viewers:
* Two of three eaglets have been visible much of the time
The other eaglet, which hatched later than its siblings, was noticeably smaller and weaker from the beginning. Although it’s only human to be concerned, experts say it is too soon to draw any conclusions. Sandy Steers — Executive Director, Friends of Big Bear Valley
“We have to track nature and see what nature wants to do. You’re not going to help us and it can be difficult to watch, but it does not help. All of this drama and all the negativity doesn’t help anything. And so I would ask that everybody take a breath, stay calm, and just watch and be amazed at the privilege that we have of watching the miracles of nature, whatever they are now.”
The fate of the third eaglet (the one who died) has given rise to several theories:
Interestingly, despite his efforts, one of the eaglets was seen earlier getting stuck into Jackie’s underbelly and almost being pulled out of the nest before finding one of the branches and rolling back in. At the time, the chick showed no signs of being hurt.
This eagle nest has an extensive history, dating to 2012:
* Built by Jackie’s parents.

Despite the loss of one of the eaglets, the fate of the third one is still uncertain, and the perseverance of these magnificent birds and the efforts of their parents have provided us with much to learn from. Whether there are two eaglets or three, the Big Bear eagle nest continues to be a testament to the raw beauty, and sometimes grim realities, of the natural world.
So keep looking, stay curious and remember, every zoo train, heaving over the cogs and bales of reading, will one day be seen with fresh eyes.
